…The emotion taking shape in the eternal language of metal brought to life…

Magdalena F. Merino

MAGALENA F. MERINO

Born in Madrid, she is a sculptress settled in her hometown where she graduated in Fine Arts by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where she also attended the doctorate courses.

This degree in Fine Arts was the culmination of a passion for the art that has been cohabitating with her since long time ago, given that she has always been in contact with sculpture at her father’s atelier, who was a sculptor and restored ancient works of art too. From a very young age, she felt attracted to the creative ambient the atelier was impregnated with, and soon she learned the techniques of carving, construction and modelling. During many moments of leisure and work, her main companions were clay, stone and wood.

In 2003, she is awarded with a important sculpture prize in Madrid, which is the definitive incentive to motivate and propel her career. Another big step in her artistic trajectory takes place in the United States, in 2004, when she starts working for the Aldo Castillo Gallery, who was in charge of exhibiting and promoting her pieces in some important places such as Chicago (Illinois), New York, Fort Wayne (Indiana) or Miami (Florida).

Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Singapore and USA are some of the places where pieces of her work were exhibited, or still are currently being exhibited. Some of her creations can be found in American and European collections and foundations.

She has also been awarded with some national sculpture prizes, and in the last few years she has had her work shown in several national and international exhibitions and art fairs.

The sculptures by Magdalena are emotions that grow solid, take shape and incarnate in bronze and iron – her favourite materials – which she converses with to extract creativity. Every dream and every desire travel from the oneiric world to the present moment, becoming real. The sculptress shows us a vision of her inner world, full of intriguing images. She uses ancestral shapes and symbols such as spirals, labyrinths, roots and time mechanisms that propel the human being – true protagonist of her work – towards different horizons, beyond their possibilities, far from their solidity. Every piece defies gravity to elevate to another level of perception and it connects with the spectator at a precise moment, sharing with them feelings we all carry deep inside of us. Her creations represent the passage of time, the intimate connection between the human being and the earth, a wish to comprehend the gears that move the world and the harmonious integration with them, a display of longing for freedom captured in the flight of the soul and the true connection between human beings. This is the true strength and inspiration of her pieces: the emotion taking shape in the eternal language of metal brought to life.

The artist is focused on grasping the internal fight of every human being, appealing to that archaic and essential part we all carry inside. By means of her refined technique to treat the materials (bronze, iron, corten steel, wood, and methacrylate), Magdalena F. Merino manages to bring strength and passion to her sculptures, giving them an irresistible mystery
